5 qualities of a jewel of a lay follower:

1. He/she has conviction [in the Buddha's Awakening]

2. He/she is virtuous

3. He/she is not eager for protective charms and ceremonies

4. He/she trusts kamma, not protective charms and ceremonies

5. He/she searches for recipients of his/her offerings inside of the Sangha, and gives offerings there first
